Choosing the best blepharoplasty surgeon is a common concern for many individuals considering an eyelid lift. My name is Dr. Julian De Silva; I am a specialist in facial cosmetic and plastic surgery. I only perform facial surgery and blepharoplasty is the most common surgery that I perform. At my patient’s request I wrote this blog to help interested blepharoplasty candidates choose the best surgeon for them.

Blepharoplasty, also termed eyelid surgery or eyelid lift, is a popular procedure as it can give a person a fresher and younger appearance with relatively fast recovery.

At the same time very topical in the news are several celebrities that look very different after plastic surgery. Eyelid surgery is a procedure that when completed well looks natural and refreshed, however it can change a person’s appearance. Eyelid surgery is a challenging plastic surgery as every person’s eyes are different and a good result is dependent on both technical excellence and artistry.

To find the best Blepharoplasty surgeon for you does require taking time and researching your surgeon. At the end of the day this is your face and you need to put some time into this. Here are a few aspects to consider:

  • A plastic surgeon that specializes in the entire body is used to surgery of centimeters of the breast and body. Blepharoplasty requires fine millimeter precision work for a great result. Find a surgeon who specializes in facial cosmetic and plastic surgery and who performs cosmetic Blepharoplasty on a weekly basis.
  • Artistic ability of the surgeon to rejuvenate your eyelids in terms of your unique facial characteristics can be evaluated with before and after photographs. Ask to look at ‘before’ and ‘after’ examples of the procedure you’re looking into.
  • Request to be put in touch with past patients. Most surgeons are more than happy to direct potential new patients to past patients to help build confidence and trust. This is a relativity new approach which I strongly encourage! If a surgeon doesn’t want you to speak to any of his/ her former patients, ask yourself why.
  • Look for a surgeon who specializes in Cosmetic Blepharoplasty as opposed to reconstructive surgery. Cosmetic surgery is an art form in which mere millimeters will make the difference; reconstructive surgery places more importance on function and less on the aesthetic result. There are many different types of cosmetic eyelid surgery and a blepharoplasty expert will be experienced in techniques including Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty, Asian Blepharoplasty, Male Blepharoplasty, Revision Blepharoplasty, Combinations with Laser and Fat Transfer, 3D-Telescopic Brow lift, as well as hidden incision techniques including trans-conjunctival blepharoplasty, fat transposition and canthopexy.
  • More than 20% of the Blepharoplasties Dr. De Silva performs are revision cases from patients who have had surgery elsewhere and outside of the UK, including the UK, North & South American, Asia and Africa. Ask your surgeon what their revision rate is. Every surgeon will have a revision rate, which is the number of revisions they perform on their own work. This should be a relativity low number in comparison to the number of treatments which they carry out.
  • Read reviews and see how recent the reviews are. Check online review sites, read magazines which cover aesthetic treatments and check to see if your surgeon has the right credentials for you. Dr. De Silva recommends looking out for surgeons who are members of British, European and American organisations.
  • Listening and Communication. It is important that your potential surgeon listens to you, takes time to understand what you are looking to achieve, and makes sure you feel rapport with the surgery. Your surgeon should also make himself readily available to follow up with and support you after your surgery.
  • Revision surgery can require more complex surgical techniques; look for an expert who is experienced and specializes in complex revision surgery.

Take your time. Your face is important; do your research and come to your own decision. You are invited to set up a consultation with Dr. De Silva in his London private practice and discuss your needs. Out of town patients often send photos via email and interact with him on Skype prior to face-to-face meeting.
