Otoplasty and Hearing

What is an otoplasty?

Otoplasty, also known as ear pinning, is a cosmetic ear surgery that modifies the shape of the outer ear, medically known as the pinna. Most commonly employed to address prominent or protruding ears, known as prominotia, an otoplasty can also be used to correct deformities and other issues requiring reconstructive ear surgery.

Does an otoplasty affect hearing?

The main goal of an otoplasty is to reposition the pinna to balance the ears with the rest of the facial features. During the procedure, an incision is made in the natural crease behind the ear, cartilage is removed and remolded, and sutures are put in place that support the ear during the healing period.

Although an otoplasty involves incisions to the external ear, the procedure does not have an impact on the internal structure of the ear. The anatomical structures related to hearing are located in the middle and inner ear are not effected by otoplasty surgery. If there was a change in hearing following an otoplasty, an otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat specialist) should be consulted. The problem may be related to a viral infection or another medical issue.
