Blepharoplasty is a plastic surgery operation that is performed to aesthetically enhance the eye area or correct defects and deformities of the eyelids. Blepharoplasty is a very effective way to rejuvenate the eye area by treating under-eye bags, tightening skin in the area, and diminishing the appearance of wrinkles. The surgery may also be performed in instances where an injury or planned surgery (e.g. removal of a skin cancer) has physically altered the natural appearance of the eyes.

If you are planning to undergo blepharoplasty, you are probably interested to learn more about the recovery process. We believe it’s very important to educate our patients about the recovery process so they can adequately prepare and make their recovery as quick and comfortable as possible.
What to expect during your recovery from blepharoplasty
After Dr De Silva finishes an eyelid surgery, he applies a lubricating ointment and loosely covers the eyelids in gauze. Dr De Silva has pioneered his own techniques that favour fast recovery and you will remain in his outpatient clinic for less than one hour after the surgery so that he can monitor your recovery before discharging you. You will be given cold compresses to apply while you wait.

After Dr De Silva has signed your discharge papers, you may return home with a family member or friend (you will not be able to drive immediately after surgery). You should plan to remain at home for at least 3 days and expect to experience some minor discomfort. You will be given pain medication, eye drops, and cold compresses to control pain and discomfort, if necessary. Swelling after blepharoplasty are expected and normal, most of Dr De Silva’s patients don’t have bruising however there is always a possibility. In most patients the majority of swelling tends to diminish within 3 to 5 days. For a surgery that is more involved including revision blepharoplasty, you should expect some amount of swelling and bruising to remain for up to 2 weeks.

Most of our patients feel comfortable returning to work within 7 days and use makeup to conceal any signs of surgery. After 3 weeks, you should be able to go completely makeup free! We encourage our patients to refrain from exercise routines and heavy housework for 3 weeks. The final results of your blepharoplasty will be seen within several months after surgery. It’s very important to continue wearing sunscreen around your eyes and avoid extreme sun exposure for 6 months following surgery to prevent visible scarring.
Tips to make your recovery more comfortable
When you leave our clinic, you will be given a detailed list of instructions to follow during your recovery. This will detail how often to use cold compresses, how long your head should remain elevated, and how often you can take certain pain medications. We will also advise you to be vigilant of any signs that may indicate an infection. Other specific care instructions may also be included. By following these instructions, you are more likely to experience a comfortable and speedy recovery after eyelid surgery.

Dr De Silva has performed countless eyelid surgeries during the years he has been in practice. During this time, he has compiled a list of tips that can help speed the recovery process. These include:

  • Keep your head elevated as much as possible in the week following surgery. It is especially important to sleep with your head elevated on several pillows for the first few nights following surgery.
  • Use cold compresses for at least 3 days at recommended intervals.
  • Avoid excessive blinking as it can lead to irritation and increased swelling.
  • Avoid strenuous activities, which can increase blood flow to the eyes and lead to more swelling and bruising.
  • Don’t drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes, as it is known to hinder the recovery process.
  • Avoid activities such as reading, watching TV, and wearing contacts, as these are known to dry out the eyes.
  • Light activity, such as walking, is known to speed the healing process. If you feel up for it, take a short walk each day during your recovery.

How to prepare for blepharoplasty

We encourage all of our patients to prepare for their recovery before surgery. After surgery, you will need to focus on resting and recovering – it is not the ideal time to go out to the shop for supplies!

Prepare your home ahead of time by cleaning it and making it a comfortable place to recover. Create a cozy place, perhaps on the couch or in your bed, where you can rest and relax in comfort. You may wish to cook some food ahead of time or arrange to have someone prepare meals for you for during the first few days. If you tend to get bored at home, arrange to have friends visit for short periods of time during your recovery.

Be sure to stock up on the supplies you will need during your recovery. You’ll want to have cold compresses readily available. These can be purchased at a medical supply store or pharmacy. If you are prescribed any medicines or other-the-counter medications, pick them up ahead of time or arrange for someone to collect them so you don’t have to venture out after surgery.
