Facelifts Facts vs. Fiction

Our faces are the windows to the rest of our being. They are at the forefront of our physical appearance–our first impressions. It is only logical that we should want to care for our faces and keep them youthful as we age. The world is filled with products, supplements, D-I-Y techniques, injections and the like, all claiming to help a person look younger.

As a specialist and expert in facial cosmetic surgery in London, I have experience performing facelifts on patients of all walks of life. Oftentimes, patients reference fearing a facelift because of the common misconceptions that surround this procedure. They cite superstar facelifts that look over-stretched and pulled, as was the case with Mickey Rourke and Bruce Jenner among others. Some fear the surgery as a consequence, however when face and neck lift surgery is performed with respect to the natural shape and contours of a face and neck, it will give a natural rejuvenation that gives a person a fresher and more youthful natural appearance.

My response to these fears is simple: a patient must choose an experienced plastic surgeon. If a patient has a trustworthy, experienced plastic surgeon using the latest in modern techniques and equipment, he or she will not receive a rewarding natural and youthful result
A common misconception is that facelifts are strictly for famous people, models, and women. This is simply not true. Men and women of all demographics are turning to facelifts to retain their younger appearance. In fact, the most common plastic surgery performed on men today is a facelift.

Another common misconception is that patients receiving facelifts undergo massive incisions around the forehead and beyond. However, with the latest innovations and techniques facelifts typically require small incisions behind the ear and along the adjacent hairline. Incisions on other parts of the head do not constitute a facelift but would rather be part of a different procedure altogether.

Finally, patients fear the infamous “stretched face” look seen on people with obvious facelifts. The most important thing to understand is that most people with the “stretched face” look have had surgery that has not respected their natural ageing process in artistry and technique. However, if a patient chooses a plastic surgeon with experience and a good track record in facial cosmetic surgery, a positive and natural rejuvenation will be achievable.
